High School University Program is for motivated, well-qualified high school students who
anticipate enrolling at the University of Utah. Students
in this program are generating a University transcript while
enrolled in high school; completed courses are applied toward
University credit. Students are eligible to take any classes being offered, with the exception of online/telecourses.
They also receive approximately 30 percent off regular tuition. Financial
assistance (financial aid/scholarships) is not available
to students participating in HSUP.
What
are the benefits of participating in HSUP?
- earn high school credit and college credit
at the same time (depending on the high school)
- take higher levels of course work not available
at the high school
- get a head start on a college career
What
are the guidelines for acceptance into HSUP?
Acceptance
is based solely on a student's cumulative GPA. Seniors need
to have at least a 3.2, juniors at least a 3.5, and sophomores
at least a 3.7. A student who does not meet the requirements will most likely
be denied. (ACT/SAT scores are
not used for admission into HSUP.)
Also, HSUP students must have successfully completed ninth
grade and must be enrolled in high school. This means that a senior's last opportunity to participate in HSUP is the spring semester of their senior year unless they are working toward completing the New Century Scholarship requirements, in which case they will be eligible to enroll in summer HSUP classes.
How
do I apply?
The HSUP
application consists of completing a student section,
a parent section, and a counselor recommendation form. Completed
forms need to also include an official copy of high
school transcripts, from the high school with an embossed seal in a sealed envelope.
Applications
and transcripts should be sent directly to the HSUP coordinator
by the specified deadlines. The deadlines for acceptance
by semester are:
Fall Semester, August 1
Spring Semester,
December 1
Summer Semester, May 1
Do I need to reapply each semester?
For tracking and accounting purposes, all HSUP students will be removed from the system at the end of every semester. Therefore, each student must reapply to the program every semester in order to register for classes.
- Returning students must reapply for the program once each year by filling out all components of the HSUP application, i.e.: the student section, the parent section, and the counselor recommendation section.
- Returning students for subsequent semesters only need to fill out page 2 of the HSUP application. Be sure to circle both the semester for which you are reapplying and the word "reapply" on the application.
- All returning students must submit official transcripts (transcripts with an embossed seal and in a sealed envelope from the high school) with all reapplications. Faxed transcripts will not be accepted.
When
do HSUP students register for classes?
HSUP
students register during regular open registration. Once a
student is accepted into the program, he or she is required
to attend a mandatory overview/information session. Students
cannot register until they attend the overview. Students may
participate in any of the 1000 and 2000 series classes the University is currently
offering as long as they meet the prerequisites.
Students can meet course prerequisites by providing a college transcript that indicates the prerequisite class has been passed or providing documentation that the appropriate AP exam has been passed with the necessary score. Students who wish to enroll in 3000 series classes or higher must obtain permission from the HSUP coordinator, the instructing professor, and their parents, and must complete and submit the Consent form for 3000 level or higher classes to the HSUP coordinator.
How many credits can I sign up for?
HSUP students will be allowed to sign up for up to seven credits per semester without any additional signature or approval required. Students may take up to 10 credits if they submit the Consent Form for 10 Credits to the HSUP coordinator.
What
is the status of HSUP students?
HSUP students
are classified as non-matriculated (that is, not currently
admitted) students. All policies and procedures that exist
for University of Utah students apply to HSUP students as
well. If the student anticipates attending the U after high
school graduation, he or she will need to go through the regular
application process for undergraduate admission as a matriculated
student.
How
much is tuition for HSUP students?
HSUP
students receive an approximate 30 percent tuition reduction
rate. In addition, tuition reimbursement for family members of University of Utah staff and
faculty can be applied up to 10 credit hours.
Whom
do I contact if I have questions?
Students
should contact the HSUP coordinator at the University of Utah's Office of Student
Recruitment if they have any questions about the High
School University Program.

Other Questions:
- Classes taken are not meant to replace high school requirements. Typically, students enroll in HSUP to take higher levels
of courses that are not offered at their high school or
to get a head start on college requirements. If students
are looking to replace High School credits, the University of Utah
can not guarantee that the courses here will be accepted
by their high school for such purposes.
- The High School University Program is not
the same as Early Admission to the University of Utah.
- Credits earned in the High School University
Program can be applied to the New
Century Scholarship.
